Douglas County Corrections Center
Omaha, NE
This 190,000 SF new design adds 606 beds to the facility, plus administrative and court room space. The exterior character of this building was a sensitive civic concern - to assure the desire for a correctional facility that would be safe, and still serve as a good neighbor with its urban context.
The treatment of the façade is based on a contemporary interpretation of the historic brick warehouses in the nearby Old Market District and other similar buildings directly adjacent to the site. The primary materials of the façade, brick, with a concrete stone base, were a logical choice, emulating the nearby warehouse vernacular.
This project was done in association with HDR Architecture. HDR provided all interior space programming and design, and BVH was responsible for the exterior design of the building.
