Milton Abrahams Branch Library

Milton Abrahams Branch Library

Omaha, Nebraska

"A shopping center for books," was the request of former Library Director Michael Phipps, envisioning the branch being built on a busy thoroughfare in northwest Omaha. He saw a state-of-the-art facility, keeping pace with its commercial neighbors. To embody those concepts, BVH designed a rectangular structure with a square lobby, faced with green-tinted reflective glass and white Italian glazed tiles. The interior key is grey and white glazed tile, chrome hardware, fluorescent lighting, red neon signage and furnishings, and built-in audiovisual stations at the circulation desk. The public area is one large space with flexible design. Function is on display with overhead steel trusses and mechanical systems. Against this monochromatic, high-tech setting, it is the people in the library and its books which provide color and life.
