Bahr Vermeer Haecker Architects and Design Alliance together created a new home for the Iowa Department of Public Safety. The Department of Public Safety houses offices for several Divisions including Criminal Investigation and the State Fire Marshal. The new complex merges a historic warehouse, originally an International Harvester showroom constructed in 1927, with a sympathetic addition designed to stand in harmony with its surroundings of the State Capitol environs.
The adaptive reuse design applies knowledge gained from BVH’s experience in the sensitive renovation of historically significant structures. BVH also provided the team direction in the development of sustainable design with the objective of LEED certification for the State of Iowa’s commitment to the environment. BVH has incorporated into the project new sustainable products in unique ways such as those manufactured from renewable or recycled sources which include sunflower seeds, wheat, cork, and recycled plastic.
