Nebraska Wesleyan University Weary Center
Lincoln, Nebraska
BVHArchitects, in association with Hastings + Chivetta, designed the new 81,300 sf NWU Center for Health and Fitness. The new facility is attached directly to the existing Knight Fieldhouse for maximum efficiency, convenience, and centralized control of the facility. Features of the Center for Health and Fitness area are a 2,550 seat performance court, three racquetball courts, locker rooms on court level for indoor sports, locker rooms on the upper grade level for outdoor sports, visiting team locker rooms, training room, equipment storage/laundry/equipment issue area, free weight room, cardiovascular/exercise and sports medicine area, and a six-lane 25-yard swimming/diving pool.
The two-story west wing contains offices for the Health and Physical Education/Athletic Departments and a Hall of Fame Room on the upper level. The Hall of Fame room features a view of the performance court. The lower level contains a multi-purpose classroom, wellness and exercise laboratory, specialty instruction area, and general public restrooms. Knight Fieldhouse and the Center for Health and Fitness are united by a central circulation atrium containing the entry lobby, central control desk, and concessions. A tunnel also links the two buildings at the far end of the complex. Major structural issues of this project included underpinning of the existing fieldhouse foundations and special site preparations due to poor soils present at the site.
