Bell Field Elementary School

Bell Field Elementary School

Fremont, NE

This 50,000 square foot elementary school was built to accommodate a growing community's school system. The three-section school consists of 18 classrooms supported by an information center, multipurpose room, gymnasium, computer lab and administrative spaces. The site of the new school was an existing ball field, surrounded by small scale, one story homes. It was important for the neighboring community and school district that the school be similar in visual scale as the neighboring homes and remaining soccer fields. Methods of proportion and scale were studied and utilized to reduce the building's visual impact on the neighborhood. Attention was given towards breaking the large roof area into smaller, sloped roof structures. Residential type materials commonly found in the adjacent community, such as steel siding and asphalt shingles are repeated on the building. The gutters and classroom windows are oversized to reduce the visual height of the exterior walls. The same architectural scale, materials and forms are applied to the interior of the building with the intent that small children might feel more comfortable in a familiar, residential type environment.
