Lincoln Public Schools High Schools
Lincoln, NE
BVH Architects, in association with another architectural firm, provided complete design services for two new High Schools for Lincoln Public Schools (LPS). These schools are the first new high schools to be built for LPS since one was constructed over 30 years ago. The new High Schools are designed with three distinct themes reflecting the many changes that have occurred since the previous facility was completed:
• flexibility in the types and arrangement of instructional spaces allowing greater adaptability to enhance scheduling philosophies, teaching strategies and growth in student enrollment;
• design for learning communities organizing instructional spaces for small groups of students and teachers focusing on personalized learning and strong personal connections; and
• incorporation of technology in a seamless manner allowing students and staff the maximum use of the power of technology.
The facilities are 369,860 gross square feet each including a full complement of educational spaces such as a full size competition gymnasium; two practice gymnasiums; competition swimming pool with training and aerobic exercise areas; 600 seat performing arts theater and black box theater; auditorium; cafeteria including a full service kitchen and servery; media center; learning community educational spaces; and associated administrative spaces. The facilities are planned to accommodate up to 1,500 students each while allowing flexibility for future growth and expandability. The two schools were occupied as scheduled.
