The Whitcomb Conservatory/Lee Memorial Chapel at Doane College in Crete, Nebraska, best known as the “Con,” was constructed in 1907 as a multi-purpose, musical and cultural venue for the College. At the front door of a historic campus, a National Register District, and after being vacant for more than 30 years, the “Con” has been restored to its original purpose. Extensive structural repairs were required along with new mechanical and electrical systems, an elevator, ADA compliance and complete material and building fabric restoration, both interior and exterior. The five sided performance hall remains the building’s focus and, in turn, the Con itself recreates the cultural and historic focus of the campus.
