Holy Rosary Catholic Church and Mission Restoration
Pine Ridge, SD
BVH Architects provided design through construction services for a new 7,900 SF Catholic Church at this Jesuit mission on the Ogallala Sioux Indian reservation. The new church replaces a 98-year-old church destroyed by fire on Good Friday, 1996. It includes a sanctuary, seating for 300 worshipers, a chapel, reconciliation chapel, two sacristies, narthex, and storage space. Symbols and materials important to the Native American culture were integrated as much as possible into the design of such things as the main altar, tabernacle, and stained glass windows.
In addition, BVH provided design services for the restoration and renovation of the existing 65,500 SF Mission. Built in 1888, it includes a Heritage Center, Jesuit residence, convent, visitor's retreat center, administration spaces and Montessori School. Work also included mechanical & electrical upgrades, restoration of existing brick exterior, and repair of the entire stone foundation.
